Society: Holier Than Thou!

Image
So, 2 sisters moved in newly to the compound. Perfect definition of "locals" They claim to be born again, so they look at other ladies and I that wear bum shorts as hell fire candidates. They make side remarks, I pretend not to hear them because they think I'm Yoruba and I won't understand Ibibio when they speak and I'm always with my earpiece on. They have been annoying other neighbors and they get ignored. A male neighbor almost beat one of them but held back because there was a fine of 10,000naira for any guy that beats his girlfriend/wife/ lady in the compound. One time, one of these girls deliberately stayed in the bathroom for 30mins because I was next. E pain me o I washed my clothes last month, and this "Red Bororo" felt that was the right time to burn her garbage, and this affected my clothes as the ashes settled on it. When I asked, she answered me rudely. What can I do? Nothing! So today, an hour ago. I washed my clothes yesterday,

Relationships : Crush? Looks Are Deceptive

Image
Good Looks, No Brains! So I'd just gained admission into the University and I was super excited. I called everyone to tell them of the big news, I called secondary school mates, called even those I went to the same primary school with, called my enemies too. I told everyone living in the same street with me, in 2days, the "good news" had spread like wild fire. I lived in the ghetto, so it was a big damn deal I gained admission compared to others that wrote JAMB more than once. The "Agberos" in my street liked me because I greeted them when they walked past my compound, then sometimes, instead of using my 20naira to buy oranges or agbalumo, I would give to them to buy "Weed/Igbo" Oh! They loved me and cheered me when I walked past them. So when news got to them I had gained admission, They gathered to congratulate me, some cried (not like they would miss me they cried because no more 20naira for weed), even if they didn't go to school, the

Kamma : What Goes Around? Comes Around

His name was Fleming, and he was a poor Scottish farmer. One day, while trying to make a living for his family, he heard a cry for help coming from a nearby bog. He dropped his tools and ran to the bog. There, mired to his waist in black muck, was a terrified boy, screaming and struggling to free himself. Farmer Fleming saved the lad from what could have been a slow and terrifying death The next day, a fancy carriage pulled up to the Scotsman's sparse surroundings. An elegantly dressed nobleman stepped out and introduced himself as the father of the boy Farmer Fleming had saved. 'I want to repay you,' said the nobleman. 'You saved my son's life.' 'No, I can't accept payment for what I did,' the Scottish farmer replied waving off the offer. At that moment, the farmer's own son came to the door of the family hovel. 'Is that your son?' the nobleman asked. 'Yes,' the farmer replied proudly. 'I'll make you a deal.

Living : Living Life Fully

Image
Remember the master teacher once said 2000 years ago, "Unless you can become like little children, your chances are zero; you haven't got a prayer." A major consideration for adults. Be like children and remember there are four ways to be more like a child no matter how old you get. . . 1) Curiosity--Be curious; childish curiosity. Learn to be curious like a child. What will kids do if they want to know something bad enough? You’re right.  They will bug you. Kids can ask a million questions.  You think they're through. They've got another million.  They will keep plaguing you.  They can drive you right to the brink. Also, kids use their curiosity to learn.  Have you ever noticed that while adults are stepping on ants, children are studying them? A child's curiosity is what helps them to reach, learn and grow. 2) Excitement--Learn to get excited like a child.  There is nothing that has more magic than childish excitement. So excited you hat

Opinion : The New Elitists

Image
YOU can tell a lot about people by looking at their music collections. Some have narrow tastes, mostly owning single genres like rap or heavy metal. Others are far more eclectic, their collections filled with hip-hop and jazz, country and classical, blues and rock. We often think of such differences as a matter of individual choice and expression. But to a great degree, they are explained by social background. Poorer people are likely to have singular or “limited” tastes. The rich have the most expansive. We see a similar pattern in other kinds of consumption. Think of the restaurants cherished by very wealthy New Yorkers. Masa , where a meal for two can cost $1,500, is on the list, but so is a cheap Sichuan spot in Queens, a Papaya Dog and a favorite place for a slice. Sociologists have a name for this. Today’s elites are not “highbrow snobs.” They are “cultural omnivores.” Omnivorousness is part of a much broader trend in the behavior of our elite, one that embraces di

Motivations : Obstacles

Image
However great the obstacles between you and your goal may be or have been, do not lay the blame of your failure upon them. Other people have succeeded in overcoming just as great obstacles. Remove such hindrances from the path for others, if you can, or tell them a way to go around. Even lead them a little distance and cheer them on. But so far as you yourself are concerned, do not stop to excuse any delinquency or half-heartedness or defeat by the plea of circumstance or environment. The great nature makes its own environment, and dominates circumstance. It all depends upon the amount of force in your own soul. While you apply this rule to yourself and make no scapegoat of "fate," you must have consideration for the weakness of others, and you must try and better the conditions of the world as you go along. You are robust and possessed of all your limbs. You can mount over the great boulder which has fallen in the road to success, and go on your way to your goa

Xenophobia Baseless Animals!!!

Image
THIS IS A "Shade" . IF YOU FEEL IT'S DIRECTED AT YOU, ABEG, IGNORE L!!! 1999, I was 7 years old then, I just got back from my Grand mother's funeral. I was with dad and mom in a bus. I don't know what our bus driver did, but I saw that Soldiers were chasing our bus and asking him to stop, he sped off instead. The bus driver didn't stop, so the best way for these men to stop him was firing gun shots at our bus, it killed 2 passengers at the back and then they shot at the tyres. They are stupid, you know? Why fire shots at passengers that did no wrong when they just could have shot at the tyres? Well, the bus driver had no choice but stopped. I saw him been dragged out, beaten and then they placed a tyre round his neck, poured him fuel and burnt him. I saw him try to run, till he fell down and stopped moving. 1999, This happened. The tires were changed and my dad drove that bus to Lagos. That single act has been affecting me for years till NOW. I ha

Time For A Rethink

Image
In light of the recent Xenophobic attacks in South Africa, it is pertinent to say that the timing of the recently concluded general elections in Nigeria couldn't have been more perfect. Nigerians as a people and as a nation that prides itself on strong moral ethics, should never have to suffer at the hands of baseless animals like those currently setting innocent foreigners on fire in South Africa. If all sectors of the Nigerian economy had been functioning properly as it ought to, there'd be absolutely no need for a Nigerian to go to a country like South Africa to live and work. Nigeria is blessed with more than enough resources to cater for the needs of her people, yet the people live in abject poverty and pains. Since gaining independence in 1960, there has been little to no development in any sector of the Nigerian economy. The average Nigerian lives on less than a dollar per day, despite the abundance of natural and human resources. Nigerians can look forward to th

Xenophobia : Thousands Flee South Africa After Mob Attacks

Image
Thousands flee after South Africa mobs attack immigrants A charity group is preparing aid packages for those who want to return home The attacks have left 5 dead -- two immigrants and three South Africans A 14-year-old boy is among those killed after a mob with machetes targeted foreigners Thousands sought refuge in temporary shelters in South Africa after mobs with machetes attacked immigrants in Durban, leaving at least five people dead, an aid group said Thursday. Heavily armed police have scrambled to stop clashes this week after local residents accused immigrants from other African nations of taking their jobs. The attacks in Durban killed two immigrants and three South Africans, including a 14-year-old boy, authorities said. "There has been an outpouring of support from ordinary South Africans who are disgusted with the attacks not only because they are foreign, or African, but because they are fellow human beings," said Gift of the Givers charity, which is h

Science: NASA's Curiosity Rover Find Water Below Surface Of Mars

Image
Nasa's Curiosity rover finds water below surface of Mars New measurements from the Gale crater contradict theories that the planet is too cold for liquid water to exist, but Mars still considered hostile to life The Curiosity rover is currently ascending Mount Sharp, in the centre of the Gale crater. Mars has liquid water just below its surface, according to new measurements by Nasa’s Curiosity rover . Until now, scientists had thought that conditions on the red planet were too cold and arid for liquid water to exist, although there were known to be deposits of ice. Prof Andrew Coates, head of planetary science at the Mullard Space , said: “The evidence so far is that any water would be in the form of permafrost. It’s the first time we’ve had evidence of liquid water there now.” The latest findings suggest that Martian soil is damp with liquid brine, due to the presence of a salt that significantly lowers the freezing point of water. When mixed with calcium perchlorate liq

Society: Settlements

Image
Settlements Before Marriages. I was gisting with my friends yesterday evening, they were both married and both from my maternal home town, when the topic "SETTLEMENT" popped into our gist. I don't know about other tribes in Nigeria, but SETTLEMENT has been going on in the Igbo nation since the days of our mothers and fathers. My dad's cousin(my uncle) once saw a girl during the usual Xmas period, he liked her and asked her to marry him. She accepted, and he paid her bride price, then traditional marriage took place immediately during the next Easter. We were all happy for my uncle when he brought her to visit us with protruding stomach, which means she conceived immediately. Time to give birth came, and she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, but she was extremely fair, so fair that my uncle began to doubt the paternity of the child. My uncle is dark in complexion, his side of my father's family; they are all dark. His mum(my dad's aunt) is dark in

The City Of Lagos, Then And Now.

Image
Lagos, the former colonial capital of Nigeria, is steeped in history and it’s one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Lagos was declared the British Colony and capital of Nigeria in 1914 and since then the city has maintained its status as the centre of civilization in Nigeria, even after Abuja was made the Federal Capital Territory. After combing through some Nigerians’ archives and compilations from history lovers, we decided to bring you a historical tour of Lagos city. We present old-meets-new photos of Lagos scenes, which show the changing face of the city since the days of our fore-fathers till now. Society: To The Ladies, 7 Virtues Of A Godly Husband

Image
1: Selflessness – Men, in general, tend to be selfish and it is one of the reasons that marriages are failing in greater numbers. A Godly husband is selfless, like Jesus. He never focused attention onto himself, but rather always on the Father and then His bride (the church). A Godly husband will follow that example by focusing his attention on God first and then his wife. Jesus taught husbands how to be servant leaders and that is what every marriage needs. Let us learn from Jesus, as He would first go to the Father for instructions and then focus on the needs of the people. As I started going to God every morning for instructions, He would help me to see how I could serve my wife every day, by showing me what I could do that day to make my wife’s life more enjoyable. My reward will  be a wife who wants to serve me and an incredible, loving, passionate marriage. 2: Humility – As a whole, men tend to be prideful. We are taught from an early age to be strong and self-reliant. Yet,

Christianity: Easter Celebrations

Image
When he was nothing but a suspended carcass, dripping with his own blood and other people’s spit, there were no worshippers around clapping their hands and singing their hymns. They were long gone. At the very end, ironically at the moment of greatest triumph, he had no followers left. That says something profoundly counterintuitive about what a successful church looks like. For if the core of the Christian message – death first, then resurrection – is so existentially full-on that nobody can possibly endure it, then a church that successfully proclaims that message is likely to be empty and not full. Which is also why, quite possibly, a successful priest ought to be hated rather than feted. For here, as elsewhere in the Christian story, success and failure are inverted. The first will be last and the last first. The rich are cast down and the poor are exulted. The true king is crowned with mockery and thorns not with gold and ermine. Christianity, properly understood, is a religion

Society: ORIAKUS! !!

Image
MEN HAVE BECOME ORIAKU(S) During the days when my dad married my mum, men where the sole heads of their respective homes. Most women were stay-home mums like my mother. They take up the man's surname, bear his children, run his home and look after the children. And most men were the sole provider and the protectors of their families. They pay the rents, send their children to school, gives their wives allowances for the home upkeep and provide clothes for their wives and children. Those were the days when women in Igbo land were referred to as "ORIAKU", days when men competes amongst themselves whose wife is more fed and well catered for than the other. And when some of them lord over their wives, it made sense. At least men were the breadwinners those days unlike today. These days some men now competes for the ORIAKU position in their homes. It beats me that today's men are more like stay-home dads while their wives took the reigns from them. A woman would t
